Amazon.co.uk Review

French football reached its zenith in the summer of 1998, winning the World Cup for the first time in a tournament played on its home soil. Le Foot brings together a series of articles and stories which take a look at the state of French football both currently, and over the last quarter of the century.

All of the big names receive good coverage, from World Cup winners Zidane, Desailly and Barthez, to those who have lit up the English Premier League: Cantona, Ginola and the Arsenal pair of Petit and Vieira. Contributors range from Michel Platini to Salman Rushdie and all aspects of the game are covered, from the players and teams, to coaches, supporters, and even the financial and betting scandals which have afflicted the game in France.

The result is a compelling mixture of analysis and insight tinged with the romantic flair evident in much of the best that French football has offered. World Cup winners aside, one is instantly reminded of the French side of the 1980s, one of the greatest sides not to lift the world crown:the incomparable Platini in midfield, one of the true great number 10s in the tradition of Pele, flanked by industrious Fernandez, graceful Tigana and artful Giresse. Zidane could only have dreamt of finding a place in that side. Excellent. --Trevor Crowe

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read, 15 May 2001
By A Customer
A fairly good book about French football. I was searching around for a book about the history of French Football and I found this one, although it is not quite an account of the history of football in France. Each chapter is somewhat different--some are straight historical studies, while others are very artsy (especially the Zidane and Petit/Vieira chapters). The only repeat author is Mr. Ruhn, so there is quite a variety of writers.

The book is divided into six sections: the Clubs, National Team, Stars, Coaches, Scandals, and Supporters. Each section contains 3 or 4 chapters (except for the Stars which has 12) devoted to the subject heading. Thus, Mr. Ruhn is able to include many different events and/or people that have significantly impacted French football over the past 25 years.

Overall, I liked the book very much. My only large complaint is that some of the chapters left me wanting a little more, e.g., the Canal Plus, Arsene Wenger, the 1982 World Cup and 1984 Euro Cup chapters. With the book under 300 pages, I felt more could have been devoted to those chapters. Also, I felt as though there should have been a chapter on Jean Tigana.

That said, it was an interesting book. Even the chapters I thought were a bit short I enjoyed. The interviews with Laurent Perpere [Canal Plus] and Michel Platini were well done as well as the chapters on Eric Cantona and Arsene Wenger. The writing by Chris Waddle and Marcel Desailly is exceptional, especially Waddle's opinions on the French game and Desailly's thoughts on life versus football.

If anything, get it for the interesting chapter on Petit and Vieira.

1.0 out of 5 stars Woeful a missed opportunity, 26 Nov 2007
Quite possibly the worst book written about football.Inaccuracies abound. That the books editor writes a section in which he believes Heysel happened in 1984, that the Liverpool fans were at the top of a stand with Juventus at the bottom when in reality they were on a terrace seprated by a fence, that the Italians were crushed on crash barriers when the cause of death was a wall collapsing & that "nearly 50" fans died when the actual number was "nearly 40",39 to be exact, exact since 1985, should show how appalling this tosh is. The "Anelka in Madrid" essay could be the funniest item ever written. Little Nic could be the 2nd coming so sycophantic is the writer. Everyone is making little Nic look bad at Madrid as he is so much more talented than Raul or Redondo is the tale we get. Shame we now know so much more about his & his brothers mercenary, surly attitude. Oh & his brothers are the salt of the earth against an evil football & media. Then there is the "Houllier has returned Liverpool to the pinnacle" guff.To read this you'd think that Liverpool were destined to win everything since.Hindsight is a great thing but this is delusion at its finest. This goes on & on throught the whole book. A section on Hibs only link to France is that Franck Sauzee played for them. Then the writer goes on about how much he loves Hibs.We also get Marseille & Tapie were innocent it was all a set up in the corruption trial, but they are back by an OM fan. That there is a great book about the country that invented the World Cup (Jules Rimet),European Cup & Player of the Year (France Footbal Magazine),has the highest scorer in a World Cup ever (Just Fontaine)or gave us Raymond Kopa from the great Real Madrid or anything about Stade Reims who played in the first 2 European Cup finals before sliding into ignomy, is undoubted just they don't deserve a mention here when you can talk about Frank Leboeuf & his genius???? Truly awful
